Editor's Take:

Umm Kulthum was the greatest singer of the Arab world. She grew up in a village in the Nile Delta, where her father, an imam, taught her to recite the Quran. As a child she performed dressed as a boy. In Cairo she became a sensation, working with the best poets and composers. Her monthly radio concerts emptied streets across the Middle East. A single song could last over an hour as she varied each line. She was called the "Star of the East". About four million people joined her funeral in Cairo.

Fatima Ibrahim es-Sayyid el-Beltagi (4 May 1904 – 3 February 1975), known by her stage name Umm Kulthum, was an Egyptian singer and film actress. She was given the honorific title Kawkab el-Sharq (Egyptian Arabic: كوكب الشرق, lit. 'Planet of the East').
