Russia's Full-Scale Invasion of Ukraine, 2022
The largest war in Europe since 1945
On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine from the north, east and south, expecting a swift victory. Instead, Ukrainian forces held the capital, Kyiv, and President Volodymyr Zelensky stayed to rally the country.
Russian troops withdrew from around Kyiv within weeks, and Ukraine retook large areas around Kharkiv and Kherson later that year. The war then settled into grinding battles along a long front line in the east and south. Millions of Ukrainians fled abroad, Western countries imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia and sent weapons to Ukraine, and the conflict reshaped European security.
Did you know? The war saw cheap drones used on a scale never seen before, transforming modern warfare.
The 5th anniversary falls on February 24, 2027.
