Editor's Take:
King Salman spent decades running Riyadh as it grew from a modest town into a huge modern capital. He became king at 79. He then handed sweeping power to his son, Mohammed bin Salman. That move broke with the old pattern of passing the throne between brothers. His reign has seen social reforms and the Vision 2030 plan. It has also seen war in Yemen and harsh crackdowns on dissent. The murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi drew global condemnation.
