Editor's Take:
Juan Ramón Jiménez spent his life chasing what he called 'naked poetry'. He stripped verse down to its purest images and music. Platero and I, his tender book about a donkey in Andalusia, is read by Spanish children everywhere. He influenced the young poets of Lorca's generation. Exile took him to the United States and Puerto Rico. He never returned to Spain. He died in Puerto Rico in 1958. His influence on Spanish-language poetry remains enormous.
