Joseph Smith founded the Latter Day Saint movement. He grew up in a poor farming family in Vermont and New York. He said he had visions of God and an angel named Moroni. Moroni, he said, led him to buried golden plates. In 1830 he published his translation as the Book of Mormon. He organised a church that same year. His followers moved to Ohio, Missouri and Illinois, facing hostility everywhere. He built the city of Nauvoo. He was killed by a mob in a Carthage jail in 1844.
