Editor's Take:

Alexander I was the tsar who defeated Napoleon. He came to the throne in 1801 after his father was murdered by court plotters. At first he talked of liberal reforms. He fought Napoleon, then made peace with him at Tilsit in 1807. In 1812 Napoleon invaded Russia and reached Moscow, but his army was destroyed in the retreat. Alexander's troops rode into Paris in 1814. He became increasingly religious and conservative. After his sudden death, rumours said he became a hermit in Siberia.

Alexander I of Russia (Russian: Александр I Павлович, romanized: Aleksandr I Pavlovich, IPA:; 23 December 1777 – 1 December 1825), nicknamed "the Blessed", was Emperor of Russia from 1801, the first King of Congress Poland from 1815, and the Grand Duke of Finland from 1809 to his death in 1825.
