Editor's Take:

Sylvia Plath wrote some of the most intense poems of the twentieth century. She grew up in Massachusetts and began publishing as a teenager. Her father's death when she was eight haunted her work. At Cambridge on a Fulbright scholarship, she met the poet Ted Hughes and married him. Her novel The Bell Jar drew on her own breakdown and suicide attempt. In her last months, in London, she wrote the poems of Ariel at astonishing speed. She died by suicide in February 1963, aged 30. Her Collected Poems won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize.
