Editor's Take:
Lula's journey from poverty to the presidency is one of Latin America's most remarkable political stories. He left school early, lost a finger in a factory accident and rose through trade unions. As president he oversaw programmes that lifted millions out of poverty. He was later jailed on corruption charges, which were annulled. In 2022 he returned to power in one of the most dramatic comebacks in modern politics.
