Editor's Take:
Joe Biden's career is a story of remarkable persistence in public life. First elected to the US Senate in 1972 at just 29, he lost his wife and baby daughter in a car crash weeks later and was sworn in at his sons' hospital bedside. He served in the Senate for 36 years, then as Barack Obama's vice-president for eight, before winning the presidency on his third attempt in 2020. In office he oversaw a major infrastructure law and large investments in clean energy, while facing deep political divisions. He withdrew from the 2024 race in July of that year, closing more than half a century in national politics.
