Editor's Take:
Pablo Picasso reinvented art not once but several times over a career of more than seventy years. A child prodigy trained by his father, he moved through a melancholy Blue Period and a warmer Rose Period before co-founding Cubism, which broke objects into angular planes seen from several viewpoints at once. His painting Guernica, a howl of anguish at the bombing of a Spanish town in 1937, remains one of the most powerful anti-war images ever made. He worked in painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking, producing many tens of thousands of works. More than anyone, he came to embody the idea of the modern artist.
