Editor's Take:
Srinivasa Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematical genius. He grew up in a poor family in southern India and failed college because he neglected every subject except maths. Working as a clerk in Madras, he filled notebooks with startling formulas. In 1913 he wrote to the Cambridge mathematician G. H. Hardy. Hardy recognised his brilliance and brought him to England. Together they did pioneering work on partitions of numbers and infinite series. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society at 30. Illness forced him home, and he died aged 32.
