Editor's Take:
Paul Watson believes protest alone does not save whales. He uses ships to block and confront whaling fleets directly. Supporters see a fearless defender of the oceans. Critics, including Japan's government, call his tactics reckless and dangerous. His campaigns drew huge television audiences. They kept international attention on commercial whaling for decades. He has also been arrested and pursued by several governments. Even critics admit few people have done more to make whaling a global issue. His supporters remain fiercely loyal.
