Editor's Take:
Ada Lovelace saw the future of computing a century before the first computers were built. Her mother steered her towards mathematics from an early age, partly to keep her away from the poetic temperament of her famous father. Working with the inventor Charles Babbage on his design for a mechanical Analytical Engine, she wrote what is regarded as the first published computer program. More strikingly, she grasped that such a machine could work with music, images and symbols, not just numbers. Today the second Tuesday of October is celebrated as Ada Lovelace Day, honouring women in science and technology.
