Editor's Take:
Britney Spears defined the sound and look of late-1990s pop. Her debut single made her a global star at just 16, and her videos and stage shows set the template for a generation of performers. Behind the success, intense media scrutiny took a heavy personal toll. A court conservatorship controlled her life and finances for 13 years, until a fan-led #FreeBritney campaign helped bring it to an end in 2021. Her story has become a wider conversation about fame, control and mental health.
