Editor's Take:
Georges Bizet never knew he had written one of the world's most popular operas. Carmen shocked its first audiences with its passionate, independent heroine. Critics were cool. Bizet died suddenly three months later, believing it a failure. Within a few years Carmen was a triumph across Europe. Its tunes, from the Habanera to the Toreador Song, are now everywhere. His earlier Pearl Fishers is also loved for its famous duet.
