Editor's Take:
Nikolai Lobachevsky challenged a rule that had been accepted for two thousand years. He showed that a consistent geometry could exist in which parallel lines behave differently from Euclid's. Few understood him in his own day. He spent his career running a provincial university. His ideas later underpinned modern mathematics and Einstein's view of curved space. Today a crater on the Moon and an asteroid bear his name. Mathematicians now count him among the founders of modern geometry.
