Georgy Zhukov was the Soviet Union's greatest commander of the Second World War. He was a peasant's son who served as a cavalryman in the First World War. In 1939 he defeated the Japanese at Khalkhin Gol. He organised the defence of Leningrad and Moscow in 1941. He helped plan the encirclement at Stalingrad and the victory at Kursk. In 1945 his armies took Berlin, and he accepted Germany's surrender. Stalin, jealous of his fame, sent him to minor posts. He later served as defence minister.
