Editor's Take:
Minaj's journey from illegal immigrant to rap royalty embodies self-determination. Her refusal of a ghostwriter deal in the mid-2000s proved prescient: witty wordplay and theatrical personas became her trademark. The three-mixtape grind from 2007 to 2009 built a loyal base before mainstream breakthrough. Unlike peers who faded, she sustained commercial dominance across two decades, adapting from hip-hop to dance-pop and back. Her 2020 chart breakthroughs and 2023 tour revenues cemented her as the genre's financial apex. Beyond sales, she reopened major-label doors for women rappers after a long drought.
