Editor's Take:

Mary, Queen of Scots lived a life of crowns, plots and tragedy. She became queen when she was six days old, after her father James V died. She was raised at the French court and married the heir to the French throne, briefly becoming queen of France too. Widowed at 18, she returned to a Scotland now dominated by Protestant reformers. Her second husband, Lord Darnley, was murdered in 1567, and her quick marriage to the chief suspect, the Earl of Bothwell, turned the nobility against her. Forced to abdicate in favour of her baby son, she fled to England. Her cousin Elizabeth I kept her prisoner for 19 years. After being linked to the Babington Plot, she was executed at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587.
