Mikheil Saakashvili is one of the most dramatic figures in post-Soviet politics. A US-trained lawyer, he led Georgia's peaceful Rose Revolution in 2003. As president he tackled corruption and famously sacked the entire traffic police. Georgia's economy grew quickly. In 2008 a short war with Russia ended in defeat. Critics accused him of abuses of power. He later moved to Ukraine and became governor of Odesa. Returning to Georgia in 2021, he was arrested and jailed.
