Frank Zappa was rock's most restless and prolific experimenter. He grew up in Baltimore and California, obsessed with R&B records and the modern composer Edgard Varèse. With the Mothers of Invention he released Freak Out! in 1966, one of rock's first double albums. His music mixed doo-wop, jazz, orchestral pieces and biting satire. He released more than 60 albums in his lifetime. He was also a fierce opponent of censorship and testified before the US Senate in 1985 against record labelling. He died of prostate cancer at the age of 52.
