Editor's Take:
Edwin Hubble showed that the universe is vastly bigger than anyone had thought. He trained as a lawyer and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford before switching to astronomy. At the Mount Wilson Observatory he used the 100-inch Hooker telescope. In 1924 he proved that the Andromeda nebula lay far beyond our galaxy. That meant there were other galaxies. In 1929 he found that galaxies are moving away from us, faster the further away they are. This was key evidence that the universe is expanding. The Hubble Space Telescope bears his name.
Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 – September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer. He played a crucial role in establishing the fields of extragalactic astronomy and observational cosmology.
