Editor's Take:
Pius VIII is one of the less familiar popes of the 19th century, partly because his reign was so short. He had earned respect for standing firm during Napoleon's occupation of Italy. As pope he took a more moderate line than his predecessor Leo XII, easing some harsh policies in the Papal States. He welcomed the Catholic emancipation granted in Britain in 1829. In France he accepted the new monarchy of Louis-Philippe after the revolution of 1830.
