Editor's Take:

Florence Pugh stands out because she makes very different characters feel completely real, whether she is a scheming Victorian bride, a wrestler from Norwich or a Marvel assassin. She rose without drama school or family connections in the industry, building her reputation through small British films before Hollywood came calling. Directors value her emotional honesty and a natural, unshowy style that keeps audiences on her side even when her characters behave badly. Her mix of serious award-worthy roles and big franchise films has made her one of the most in-demand actors of her generation. For anyone born on 3 January, she is a birthday twin with a career that is still clearly on the rise.

Florence Pugh ( PEW; born 3 January 1996) is an English actress. Her accolades include a British Independent Film Award, in addition to nominations for an Academy Award and three BAFTA Awards.

Florence Pugh: The Oxford Actor Who Took Hollywood by Storm

From a small British indie film to Marvel, Nolan and Dune in under a decade

Born in Oxford on 3 January 1996, Florence Pugh spent part of her early childhood in southern Spain, after doctors suggested a warmer climate would help a breathing condition she had as a baby. She grew up in a creative family and was acting in school plays long before any formal training. She never went to drama school. Her first screen role, in the 2014 boarding-school mystery The Falling, came from an open audition when she was still a teenager.

Her breakthrough came two years later in Lady Macbeth, a bleak, low-budget period drama in which she played a young bride who turns ruthless. Critics were stunned, and the role won her the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress. In 2019 she showed remarkable range in a single year: a real-life wrestler in Fighting with My Family, a grieving young woman in the cult horror film Midsommar, and a fresh, funny Amy March in Little Women, which earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Since then she has moved easily between blockbusters and smaller dramas. She joined Marvel as the sharp-tongued spy Yelena Belova in Black Widow and later led Thunderbolts*. She also appeared in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and in Dune: Part Two, and starred opposite Andrew Garfield in the love story We Live in Time. Away from the screen, her relaxed, funny social media posts, including home cooking videos, have made her one of the most likeable stars of her generation.
