Editor's Take:

David Lloyd George was the only British prime minister whose first language was Welsh. He grew up in a modest household in Llanystumdwy, raised by his shoemaker uncle after his father died young. As chancellor he introduced the People's Budget of 1909, taxing the rich to pay for old-age pensions. That fight broke the power of the House of Lords. He became prime minister in December 1916 and drove Britain on to victory in the First World War. At Versailles he tried to temper French demands. Scandal over the sale of honours dogged his later years.

David Lloyd George, 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor (17 January 1863 – 26 March 1945), was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 to 1922.
