Editor's Take:
Al Capone became the most famous gangster in American history. He grew up in Brooklyn, the son of Italian immigrants, and left school at 14. A knife fight left him with the scars behind his nickname, Scarface. He moved to Chicago and rose to run its biggest bootlegging empire during Prohibition. His outfit was blamed for the St Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929. The government could never pin murder on him. Instead he was convicted of tax evasion in 1931. Syphilis ruined his health in prison, and he died at 48.
