Editor's Take:
Amy Lee gave early-2000s rock one of its most distinctive voices. She grew up in Arkansas and trained as a classical pianist before meeting guitarist Ben Moody at a youth camp. Together they formed Evanescence, mixing heavy guitars with piano, choirs and her soaring soprano. Their debut album Fallen sold more than 17 million copies, driven by the singles Bring Me to Life and My Immortal. Moody left mid-tour in 2003, and Lee became the band's creative leader. She steered it through line-up changes, a long hiatus and orchestral reworkings of its songs. She has also written film music and a children's album. Evanescence won two Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist.
