Heinrich Heine died aged 58. He was born on 13 December 1797 and died on 17 February 1856.

German poet of the Book of Songs, whose lyrics were set by Schubert and Schumann, and a sharp political journalist in Paris exile

Did you know? His work was so popular in Germany that even the Nazis had to publish his poems as anonymous folk songs.

Editor's Take:

Heine was a poet with two voices, one tender and romantic, the other sharp and mocking. His love poems were so musical that composers such as Schubert and Schumann set many of them to music. At the same time, he wrote biting satire about German politics, censorship and narrow-mindedness, which made him enemies at home. Living in Paris for much of his adult life, he became a bridge between French and German culture. One line from his play Almansor, warning that those who burn books will end up burning people, is now remembered as eerily prophetic.

Profile

Heinrich Heine: Romantic Poet and Fearless Satirist

German poet and journalist, born in Düsseldorf on 13 December 1797

Born into a Jewish family in Düsseldorf on 13 December 1797, Heine tried banking and law first. He soon gave them up to devote himself to writing.

His Book of Songs (1827) made him famous, and poems from it were turned into much-loved songs by Schubert and Schumann. His travel writing, mixing humour and politics, was hugely popular but often clashed with censors.

In 1831 he moved to Paris, where he spent the rest of his life writing about France for German readers and Germany for French ones. In his final years he was confined to bed by illness, but he kept writing poetry until his death in 1856.
