Editor's Take:
Trajan was remembered by the Romans as optimus princeps, the best of emperors. He was born in Italica in Spain, the first emperor from outside Italy. A seasoned soldier, he was adopted by the elderly emperor Nerva. He conquered Dacia, roughly modern Romania, and its gold paid for great buildings in Rome. Trajan's Column records the war in a spiral of carved scenes. Under him, the empire reached its greatest size. He was also known for his care for the poor.
