Editor's Take:
Samuel Johnson gave English its first great dictionary. He grew up poor in Lichfield, the son of a bookseller, and left Oxford without a degree. He worked for years as a struggling writer in London. His Dictionary, compiled with a few helpers over about nine years, appeared in 1755. He was also a poet, essayist, critic and editor of Shakespeare. James Boswell's biography made his wit legendary. "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life" is his.
