Editor's Take:
Hadrian was the Roman emperor who stopped expanding the empire and started defending it. He was born into a family from Roman Spain and became the ward of his relative, the emperor Trajan. He gave up some of Trajan's conquests in the east. He spent much of his reign travelling, inspecting armies and cities across the provinces. In Britain he ordered the great wall that still bears his name. He rebuilt the Pantheon in Rome and loved Greek culture. His reign also saw the brutal crushing of the Bar Kokhba revolt in Judaea.
