Editor's Take:
Shah Jahan presided over the most splendid age of Mughal architecture. After his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory. It took some twenty years. He also built the Red Fort and a new capital in Delhi. His wars and buildings strained the treasury. In old age he lost a bitter succession struggle among his sons. He spent his final years confined in Agra Fort. From there he could see the Taj Mahal.
