Editor's Take:
Osho drew huge crowds by mixing Eastern mysticism with ideas from Western psychology. He challenged religious and social conventions, including attitudes to sex, which made him a target for critics in India. His dynamic meditation techniques attracted thousands of Western seekers. In Oregon his commune clashed bitterly with local residents, and some of its leaders carried out a mass food poisoning in 1984. He left the country in 1985 under an immigration plea deal. His books and recorded talks remain widely read.
