Editor's Take:
Muhammad Ali Jinnah is honoured in Pakistan as Quaid-e-Azam, the Great Leader. He was born in Karachi and trained as a barrister in London. Back in Bombay he became one of India's most successful lawyers and joined the Indian National Congress. For years he worked for Hindu–Muslim unity. Growing distrust of Congress led him to rebuild the Muslim League. In 1940 the League adopted the Lahore Resolution calling for separate Muslim homelands. When British India was partitioned in August 1947, he became Pakistan's first Governor-General. Already gravely ill with tuberculosis, he died just over a year later.
