Editor's Take:
Maximilian was a liberal-minded Habsburg prince. Napoleon III offered him a throne in Mexico. Conservative Mexicans backed the plan, and he accepted. He arrived to find much of the country still loyal to the republican President Benito Juárez. He tried to rule as a reformer, which upset his own supporters. When French troops left, his regime collapsed. He was captured and shot despite pleas from across Europe.
