Editor's Take:
Jackson transformed near-death into cultural mythology. The shooting that left him with facial scarring became inseparable from his artistic identity, lending street credibility to music that balanced menace with pop hooks. His debut arrived when gangster rap needed reinvention for the mainstream. Later albums showed diminishing returns as he chased commercial trends rather than trusting his original formula. His pivot to television proved shrewd: Power demonstrated business acumen beyond music. Billboard ranked him among history's greatest rappers, yet his legacy rests on one extraordinary album and the survival story that preceded it.
