Editor's Take:
Einaudi shows how a classically trained composer can reach listeners far beyond the concert hall. After studying with Luciano Berio, he moved from chamber and orchestral writing to spare piano pieces. Those pieces borrow from pop and world music, and he has worked with Malian and Armenian musicians. Film-makers and advertisers use his work often, so many people know his tunes without knowing his name. Some classical critics find it too simple, yet that plainness draws many learners to the piano.
