Editor's Take:
Louisa May Alcott wrote one of the most loved novels about growing up. She grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, among thinkers such as Emerson and Thoreau. Her father's idealistic schemes left the family poor, so she wrote to earn money. In the Civil War she worked as a nurse, until typhoid nearly killed her. Her Hospital Sketches drew on that time. In 1868 she published Little Women, based on her own family. Jo March, the bookish, independent heroine, was modelled on Alcott herself. She also campaigned for women's votes.
