Editor's Take:
Trotsky was one of the chief architects of the Russian Revolution, and then one of its most famous victims. He helped organise the Bolshevik seizure of power in 1917 and went on to build the Red Army, which won the brutal Russian Civil War. After Lenin's death, he lost a bitter power struggle with Joseph Stalin and was expelled from the Soviet Union. From exile he became Stalin's fiercest critic on the left, writing histories and polemics that attracted followers worldwide. He was assassinated in Mexico City in 1940 by a Soviet agent wielding an ice axe.
