Editor's Take:
Kim Jong-un became leader of North Korea in 2011, the third member of his family to rule the country since its founding. Very little was known about him when he took power, and he remains one of the world's most secretive leaders. He has greatly expanded North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programmes, creating tension with neighbouring countries and the United States. In 2018 and 2019 he held historic summits with the leaders of South Korea and the United States, though they produced little lasting change. Human rights organisations describe the country under his rule as one of the most repressive in the world.
