Editor's Take:
Alfred Russel Wallace came up with natural selection independently of Charles Darwin. He left school at 14 and worked as a surveyor. He spent years collecting specimens in the Amazon and then the Malay Archipelago. In 1858, sick with fever, he worked out how species evolve and wrote to Darwin. Their papers were presented together, prompting Darwin to publish On the Origin of Species. Wallace also mapped a line separating Asian and Australian wildlife. It is still called the Wallace Line. He became a passionate campaigner for social causes.
