Editor's Take:

Karel Čapek gave the world the word "robot". He was one of the leading Czech writers between the two world wars, a novelist, playwright and journalist. His 1920 play R.U.R. imagined artificial workers who rise up against their human makers. His brother Josef suggested the name, from the Czech word for forced labour. His novel War with the Newts satirised fascism and greed. He was a close friend of President Tomáš Masaryk and recorded long conversations with him. He openly opposed Hitler. He died of pneumonia months after the Munich Agreement.
