Husayn ibn Ali refused to pledge loyalty to the Umayyad ruler Yazid. To him, Yazid was an unjust ruler. With a small group of family and supporters he set out for Kufa. He was surrounded at Karbala, cut off from water, and killed with most of his companions. For Shia Muslims his stand became the ultimate symbol of resisting tyranny at any cost. Every year on Ashura, millions mourn him. The Arbaeen pilgrimage to his shrine is one of the largest gatherings on earth.
