Editor's Take:

Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuits, one of the Catholic Church's most influential orders. He was a Basque nobleman and soldier. In 1521 a cannonball shattered his leg at the siege of Pamplona. While recovering he read lives of Christ and the saints and resolved to serve God. He wrote the Spiritual Exercises, a guide to prayer and decision-making. At the University of Paris he gathered a small band of companions. In 1540 the pope approved the Society of Jesus. Jesuits went on to found schools and missions worldwide.
