Editor's Take:
Humphry Davy showed that electricity could tear compounds apart. He used it to reveal new elements in a burst of discoveries. He was a showman as well as a scientist, and his lectures drew fashionable London crowds. His safety lamp saved many miners from gas explosions. He refused to patent it so it could spread freely. He also wrote poetry and was friends with Coleridge. His greatest discovery, some joked, was Michael Faraday.
