Editor's Take:
Gerd Müller was short, stocky and unremarkable to look at, yet few strikers have ever been so deadly in the penalty area. He scored with toe-pokes, deflections and sharp turns in tight spaces, often from barely a yard out. At Bayern Munich he helped turn a regional club into Europe's best team. For West Germany his goals won a European Championship and a World Cup. His 40 Bundesliga goals in one season stood as a record for almost fifty years. After retiring he battled alcoholism, then worked as a coach at Bayern.
