Editor's Take:
Amartya Sen changed how economists think about poverty and famine. He grew up in Santiniketan, at the school founded by Rabindranath Tagore, who chose his name. As a boy he witnessed the Bengal famine of 1943. His research showed that famines often happen even when food is available, because people lose the means to buy it. He argued that democracies rarely suffer famines. His ideas helped create the UN's Human Development Index. He won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1998. He has taught at Cambridge, Oxford and Harvard.
