Editor's Take:
Gérard Depardieu was for decades the dominant figure of French cinema. He was a huge, physical actor who could be brutish or tender. He worked with Truffaut, Pialat and many others. His Cyrano is one of the great screen performances. His later years have been overshadowed by scandal. A Russian passport and admiration for Vladimir Putin drew criticism. Many women have accused him of sexual misconduct. His conviction in 2025 has reshaped how France views its most famous actor.
