Editor's Take:
Friedrich Merz spent years as Angela Merkel's rival. He lost out to her and left politics for a career in law and finance. He came back after she retired, won the party leadership on his third attempt, and led the CDU to victory in 2025. He promised a tougher line on migration and a stronger German role in European defence. He needed coalition partners and an unusual vote in parliament. His comeback is one of the more remarkable in recent European politics.
