Editor's Take:
Commodus ended Rome's run of so-called good emperors. Where his father had spent his life on campaign and in reflection, Commodus made peace on the frontier and turned to spectacle at home. He styled himself as a new Hercules and entered the arena to fight, which shocked the Senate. Government drifted into the hands of favourites. His murder plunged the empire into a year of civil war. Ridley Scott's film Gladiator later made him a famous screen villain.
